Mahira Being in A Dance Group

What is it like being in a dance troupe???

Anyone who knows me knows every Sunday is Mahira day in my life. This is the time where we spend at least 6 hours mainly doing several things:

-learning and practicing choreography- taught by our fantastic director and teacher Melissa Pina (Melissa Bellydance). Also some of the Mahira girls who have been dancing a while have taught us some amazing choreographies and will be teaching us more very soon :).

-Preparing for performances- things like formations, transitions, AND the one that stresses me out the most--- where our props should go when we perform on stage! (Believe me this one is soooo stressful)!

-Cleaning choreography- this is quite complicated but essential if you are in a troupe where looking at every detail is important when making sure we are in sync.

-Having fun together- a lot of us are quite crazy and silly compared to the average adult (especially me), however I can truly say that I love being in the company of our troupe and we have grown closer and closer over time.

I would say that the last point is the most important because no matter how technically sound a group is, a troupe should always have synergy when performing together. Last term, there was almost 20 of us, all unique in our style of bellydance/ dance background and personality. I feel very fortunate to be with a group of girls where everyone is positive and supportive of one another, which is a quality that many 'all girl' environments lack.

After all, a car cruises along when all of its parts connect properly as one unit, rather than relying on one component to make it drive.

- (yes I made this one up, no- I'm not an engineer but I could have been :)- I hope you get my analogy!!)
